“When you struggle to learn something,
your brain actually GROWS.”
We know that what we think, we become. What you believe fuels your behavior, and behavior determines success.
It stands to reason, then, that how you see yourself and the challenges you face daily in business, has a lot to do with the growth and success of your company.
Your Mindset, Your Business
Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck writes on how our mindset affects success in life—both in the relationships that we form, and in our personal and business pursuits. Her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success examines how having either a fixed mindset or a growth mindset determines how we view our ability to grow and succeed.
If you have a fixed mindset, you might believe that your character, along with your mental and creative abilities are set for life—that you can’t really change these things, and that your success is simply the result of those given but fixed capabilities. Striving for success and avoiding failure become your way of maintaining your sense of self, and believing that your abilities are set (the fixed mindset) results in a need to prove yourself to feel successful.
If you have a growth mindset, however, you likely thrive on change and challenge, and you tend to see failure not as evidence of your lack of intelligence or ability, but as an opportunity to learn, grow and expand your abilities. You see your inherent capabilities as a starting point for growth.
|FIXED Mindset||GROWTH Mindset|
|BELIEF||Intelligence is set||Intelligence is malleable|
|GOAL||Need to establish intelligence||Want to learn new things|
|EFFORT||I had to work so hard!||I worked hard!|
|FAILURE||Failure is not my fault||What can I learn from this?|
What’s Your Mindset?
Since everything you do affects your business, it’s important to identify how you see yourself and, by extension, your business efforts. In Dr. Dweck’s own words:
“My research has shown that the view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects the way you lead your life. It can determine whether you become the person you want to be and whether you accomplish the things you value.”
