Time To Stand Up?

With recent research showing the ill effects of sitting all day, the popularity of standing desks is on the rise. Many of our employees at Phone.com are rigging up and using standing desks (Click here for one example). This is not a new concept. For hundreds of years, people have chosen to stand instead of sit when doing desk work. Thomas Jefferson, for example, used an innovative six-legged desk with an adjustable slanted top that would be the envy of modern standers.

There are many reasons to choose to stand to do your work. Standing has been known to help people with back pain and I believe it—you simply won’t be hunched over a keyboard all day! And many insist it’s just much healthier and may help promote weight loss. One writer experimented and found his heart rate was 10 beats per minute higher while standing versus sitting, and that he burned 72 calories standing and only 54 sitting in one hour. Many insist that standing to work simply gets your creative juices going.

Here comes the bottom line: Standing desks range from $100 to several thousand dollars, with the more expensive models allowing you to make electrical adjustments for sitting and standing in various positions. You can easily find a comfortable, stylish option for between $500 and $1,200 online.

On the other hand, if you are not ready to spend that kind of money, there are several DIY solutions. You can either build something yourself, or many people just raise up what they already have on their sitting desks. I use two step stools, placed on my desk. The ten-inch stool raises my laptop to waist height, and the 14 inch raises my monitor to eye level. I find this to be pretty safe and sturdy. The stools have rubber feet, slip-resistant tops and can hold over 200 lbs a piece. Combined, I believe they cost me less than $12.

Personally, I’ve found that I am significantly more productive at my standing desk. I don’t spend time looking at Facebook and other diversions. Also, I’m using foldable stools so it’s easy to remove them and sit down for a while if I like. I do get tired of standing sometimes!
