Can An Eye Doctor Save Money Using SMS?

I had lunch with an eye doctor friend Harvey today and we talked about all kinds of things including how he has so many no shows and missed appointments. He was telling me that the day after a holiday weekend (last Tuesday) he sometimes has as many as 40 missed appointments in his entire practice, suffice to say he has a thriving practice with multiple doctors, but it still cuts into his bottom line.

The third person at lunch (Allen) is a friend who uses Phone.com and he told Harvey to sign up for a line and start sending text message reminders to his clients with upcoming appointment reminders. This seems like a no brainer to me. I read a few years ago on MIR Review that sending text reminders to patients lowered the rate of missed appointments by 27%. How can any doctor ignore this stat. So what would this involve on Harveys behalf. Well he’d have to sign up for a Virtual Office account and give his staff extensions so they can start sending out reminders. All of this could take no more then an hour but Harvey’s staff also needs to learn how to create and send the text messages. Well that should take all of 5 minutes. Basically all they have to do is log in select Send SMS then copy and paste the patients number and the reminder message into the text box and they’re all set to to click Go and be done.

That’s it, that’s the extent of having to send a reminder text to a patient. This can be used for more then just reminding patients about appointments. It can also be used as a reminder that it’s time to schedule another appointment, pick up glasses/contacts they ordered, send them a happy birthday text, a happy holidays text or anything else you may want. It’s really as simple as it sounds.
