Phone.com at SXSW 2014 – Take 2!

by Aaron Rosenthal

It seems like just yesterday that I was writing about Phone.com’s first year down at SXSW 2013.  That’s South By Southwest for you newbs.  Now, one week after SXSW 2014, I’m mostly recovered and thrilled to say that Phone.com made a big splash this year.

We came; we exhibited; we conquered!

For two years, now, Phone.com has exhibited during SXSW alongside sister portfolio companies including Bottlenose, distil networks, Gobbler, Livefyre, Parse.ly, Tackk, Whisk, and others. Besides being awesome companies, what do we all have in common? We all share a common investor — ff Venture Capital.

For 3 straight days and nights the ffMASSIVE pavilion delivered a not-to-be-missed SXSW destination in the heart of downtown Austin. The event featured boxing robots, free BBQ, free beer, a long list of panels and talks, music that went into the wee hours of the morning, and one very popular Phone.com game – Phone Targets!

As with any exhibit, the goal, of course, is to stand out. So this year Phone.com brought down a little game to help alleviate the stress of all things SXSW… by… destroying… outdated… desk phones… with baseballs! This is the best use of old desk phones I could come up with…

We wanted everyone to know that unlike so many other phone companies and phone system manufacturers, Phone.com lets our customers use almost anything as a phone. iPhone, Android, iPad, tablet, laptop, desktop, MAC, PC, IP desk phone, archaic analog telephone… no problem! They can all work! The idea of “what is a telephone” has been flipped on its head, and now businesses have a plethora of devices they probably already own that can be used as office phones.

Not to be forgotten were some impressive talks that surely rivaled the official SXSW schedule. Our very own CEO Ari Rabban participated in a panel titled “Outside the (V) Alley” which was moderated by Nicole Glaros, Managing Director at Techstars.  Amazon CTO Werner Vogels moderated a very interesting panel on privacy and security. These were some of the activities by day…. and then there were the nights!

Popular party!ffMASSIVE Party

With back-to-back-to-back musical performances Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings there was no rest for the wicked! Phone.com with ffVC and other portfolio companies hosted three nights of non-stop music for SXSW crowds in the thousands. With lines a block long, our parties were some of the best during SXSW Interactive. This could also be why it took me a week to recover!

So with SXSW 2014 over, Phone.com has some cool new toys and swag for our upcoming events this year. Keep an eye on our events calendar to learn where you’ll find Phone.com next.
